May 18, 2001, Newsletter Issue #38: Get Energized- Learn Something New

Tip of the Week

There are hundreds of ways you can make use of your free time this summer and come away with new knowledge, skills, energy, and contacts. If you are interested in more structured learning and possible college credits, check with your local college. They often offer intersession classes on topics of interest to the community at large as well as regular classes condensed into the shorter intersession time frame. Many colleges also allow high school students to enroll in their regular summer classes.

You may want to explore many different areas of interest. Find out what free or low cost workshops are available in your community. Businesses, civic organizations, museums and arts councils host events such as free guitar lessons, cooking demonstrations, CPR classes, or programs on art or culture. If, when you have completed the course, you find it is an area of definite interest, ask the teacher how to get more involved in that area. Maybe you could volunteer to help with the next workshop or shadow the expert. Showing enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to work may open other doors of opportunity for you.

If the activity you want to pursue is expensive, try to barter your time for access. My daughter traded time working in a stable for time riding the horses. It was a great way to learn about horses and their care while earning riding time. She was also able to determine whether she wanted to spend the time and money necessary for a horse of her own.

The Internet offers another avenue for exploration. You might sign up for an online college class, research areas of interest, visit “how to” sites, or make connections with a mentor.
