March 23, 2001, Newsletter Issue #30: Organizing College Information Packets

Tip of the Week

Start getting a handle on the whole process by taking a trip to the office supplies department of your favorite store. You will need a box of file folders, a three ring binder and a package of plastic page sleeves. If you are going to need a file cabinet or crate after the college search is completed buy one now. Otherwise you can use cardboard boxes to organize your files.

As information begins arriving from each college, make a file folder for that college. Scan the information packets for any important deadlines or criteria of interest to you. Make notes of this information on the outside of the appropriate folder for each college. Keep the files in alphabetical order by college. As you cull institutions from the list, move their folders to a separate drawer or box. Keep all of your college information packets until after your freshman year in college. A large number of college students transfer to another institution following the freshman year. Having the materials available and organized will make this next transition easier.
