July 6, 2001, Newsletter Issue #45: How Did I Ever Forget That?!

Tip of the Week

Photos give us pictorial clues, which revive our memories, but journals or diaries are even better tools for our personal archives. Usually, the more detailed your written accounts the more interesting and vivid you will find them at a later date. It is often difficult to faithfully keep a journal or diary, but even sketchy entries will help you remember those special times of your life. If you don’t feel you have the time necessary to devote to a journal or diary, keep your appointment books or monthly calendars. You will be able to track your progress, interests, growth, patterns and use of time through the years and gain insights into your life. You may be surprised by what you find. (As a counselor it is beneficial for me when working with high school students to remember that more of my diary entries during high school were devoted to the social arena than to the classroom setting, too.) As with scrapbooks or photo albums, your written records can be treasures for the future or jump-start your creative juices when you have writing assignments for school or college applications.
