May 4, 2001, Newsletter Issue #36: Volunteering May Lead to Careers and Scholarships

Tip of the Week

Summer is the perfect time to explore your interests and how they might relate to possible careers. One way to accomplish this is to volunteer. Are you interested in careers in the medical field? Volunteer to help at your local hospital. Are you thinking about becoming a veterinarian? Volunteer at your local animal shelter, veterinarian’s office, zoo or ranch. Many local charities, not for profit organizations and community service organizations depend on volunteer support for their projects. Find one that interests you and devote some of your summer to getting involved. If you are a conscientious volunteer and find you are still interested in your chosen area, your volunteer efforts may open a door to a future paid position, which will assist you in pursuing your career goals.

Volunteering also opens up scholarship opportunities. For example, the President’s Service Challenge offers $1,000 to high school juniors and seniors who have volunteered a minimum 100 hours in the last 12 months. Five hundred dollars is made available to each high school in the United States to be matched by five hundred dollars from a local source. Keep track of your volunteer hours and ask a supervisor to sign your documentation.
