May 25, 2001, Newsletter Issue #39: Plan the Ultimate Trip for 2002

Tip of the Week

Have you always wanted to travel to a foreign country, but didn’t know how to take the first step? Start now researching places that might be of interest to you. Think about your reasons for making the trip. Do you want to improve a language you have already studied or do you want to learn a new language? Is your primary purpose to learn about a different culture, to help others or to take advantage of the activities offered by a different climate? How long do you want to be away from home? Programs are available for the summer, a semester, or a full year. Most programs have age requirements with a minimum age of 15 and a maximum of 19. Costs vary depending on the amount of time you plan to be abroad and the type of program you select. Some programs cost about the same as a year in college, while other programs are supported by civic organizations and cost much less. Talk to your parents, school counselors and civic organizations to discover what options might be available to you. And so you will be ready should opportunity knock- apply for your passport, make sure your normal vaccinations are up to date and start saving for your dream trip.
