April 27, 2001, Newsletter Issue #35: Need More Scholarships?

Tip of the Week

After the Federal Government, the college of your choice will be the best source for scholarships. Contact someone in the admissions office for applications specific to that college. Departments also have scholarships available to students who plan to major in their specific area. Although the admissions office is usually aware of most scholarships, you may discover other offerings when visiting with department heads. Don’t be afraid to ask about possible funding. If you are still in high school, work closely with your high school counselors as most local and regional scholarships are routed through their offices. Find out which counselors handle the incoming scholarships and check-in with their offices often. Scholarships arrive daily and are often due within a short time period. Ask your counselors to suggest the best way for you to keep updated on their new arrivals. Since you are organized (see Student-tips Newsletter #30) you will easily be able to return those completed scholarship applications to the appropriate agency before the deadline, which is the first step in winning a scholarship.
